034 HOUSE SÃO BENTO

LISBON 2009-2012

Between the Princípe Real and the valley that descends to Rua de São Bento, a building advances on a promontory over the interior of the block, facing the Assembly of the Republic from above and glimpsing the Tagus over the Boavista embankment.

Lisbon's topography builds unexpected landscapes that architecture often underlines. Like here.
At the beginning of the century In the 20th century, the expansion of the three-storey building, carried out perpendicularly to the access street, resulted in a narrow and long house, 8 meters wide and more than 30 meters long.
The redesign of the space allocated the original half of the building to the private part, reorganizing the rooms, sanitary facilities and storage, and access to an attic on the upper floor, with a small terrace cut out on the roof.
The most recent half of the construction was occupied by a long living room and the kitchen at the top, next to a covered balcony that frames the houses of São Bento and the river.

(...) Fecharam-me todas as portas abstractas e necessárias.

Correram cortinas de todas as hipóteses que eu poderia ver da rua.

Não há na travessa achada o número da porta que me deram. (...)

Álvaro de Campos (Fernando Pessoa), 1926
