GENÉVE, SWITZERLAND 2023- (with PLCO arquitecto and Site Specific arquitectura)/ VASSCO consórcio de arquitectura
This project approaches the program with simplicity and logic, aiming to restore the original qualities of spaces that have been altered over time. Seeking to regain the 1905 volume, including the Senebier wing extension, and designing a large extension for the storage of collections beneath the central courtyard, the project aims for volumetric clarity, restoring the original clarity and symmetry of the historic building, which is closely linked to the Jura wing and the central building.
Externally, the northern and southern annexes are entirely remodeled. The stone base is redefined in masonry, creating continuity with the walls and the terrace-esplanade of the grotto-fountain. This approach resolves the connection between the library and the different garden levels, accommodating two new pavilions. These lightweight, luminous glass and wood structures reinterpret nearby elements – like the Bastions kiosk near Place Neuve or the former orangery and its two greenhouses – creating a series of public spaces closely connected to the garden (including a café and free reading room) and offering a new library facade facing the city.
Inside, the same intent to restore the authenticity of spaces is evident, removing intermediate floors added over the years and restoring original ceilings, to reestablish the original spatial structure. Whereas the collection storage (conservation) is entirely buried beneath the central courtyard, defined by existing and proposed light wells, as BGE receives significant annual deposits requiring extensive, highly specialized book processing and conservation space.
